The contest is now closed. The 25 pieces to be displayed at the event will be announced in the beginning of September 2010. Winners of the contest will be announced at the event.
The Women’s Medical Fund presents a juried art contest celebrating the struggle for reproductive justice. In a blend of art and social justice, the contest will culminate in a Reproductive Justice Arts Extravaganza. This September gallery event will be an evening of performance art and a showing of up to 25 pieces of the submitted contest art. The juried art contest is in three mediums and we are asking you to please respond to the following quote:
“No woman is required to build the world by destroying herself.” — Rabbi Sofer
When creating your art, please keep in mind that reproductive justice is a commitment to “the complete physical, mental, spiritual, political, social, and economic well-being of women and girls, based on the full achievement and protection of women’s rights.” This includes the right to have a child, the right not to have a child, the right to parent the children women have, the right to control birthing options, and the right to an empowering education so that all women are aware of these invaluable rights (paraphrased from Loretta Ross, National Coordinator of SisterSong: Women of Color Reproductive Health Collective). The jury will be judging your art work based on how it relates both to reproductive justice and to Rabbi Sofer’s quote. All skill and experiences levels are encouraged to submit.
Up to 25 submissions will be displayed at the Reproductive Justice Arts Extravaganza on September 25, 2010. First place prizes will be awarded $100 each. Each artist will have the option to offer her or his work for sale that evening. If the artist would like, she or he can donate part of the proceeds of their sale to WMF’s work, which is to provide direct financial assistance and other support to low-income women and girls in Southeastern Pennsylvania who wish to terminate a pregnancy but cannot afford a safe, legal abortion.
Submission Deadline is: July 16th, 2010.
